Idaho is known for a varied landscape and beautiful landscapes. The climate tends to be quite cold in the winter, so be prepared for frigid temperatures in February. Despite the cold, there are a lot of events that take place that can be whole lot of fun. Ashton, Idaho has been made world famous by the American Dog Derby. The American Dog Derby began in 1917 when Tud Kent won the event in a blinding blizzard. The derby has over ninety years of rich history and it attracts mushers from all over the country. The Derby is held every February and has a lot of fun events as well as the famous races. There are 100-mile races for 12 and 8 dogs as well as a potluck and junior race that are shorter. Other events include the mutt race and weight pull.

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is held annually in Moscow, Idaho. The festival has attracted many greats including Ray Brown, Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves and many others. More than fifty jazz artists come to Moscow to conduct workshops and hold performances. The Madcap Mardi Gras is an annual celebration that includes a masked ball, fireworks, jazz and other interesting event. This event is held in Sandpoint and you don’t want to miss the Rubber Chicken Fling and Potato Thrust while you are there.

Visit Mountain Home for the Idaho Snowriders President Day Weekend. This event is held in at Anderson Ranch Recreation Area. The event is hosted each year and riders enjoy all types of terrain on 380 miles of well-marked and groomed trails. The Anderson Ranch Recreation Area offers lodging, food, gas, and rentals. The event is followed by a dance and dinner. The Winter Games of Idaho is held each year and features competition for state and regional amateur athletes.

There are various events including alpine and Nordic races, snowboarding, hockey and figure skating. The events are held in several cities throughout the months of January and February. Cities include Boise, McCall, Idaho Falls, Kellogg, Sun Valley, Salmon Wallace and Donnelly. Fees may vary depending on the competition you wish to attend. There are a lot of winter events that happen throughout the state of Idaho. You are sure to find something interesting to see and do during this time of the year whether you are traveling with friends or family. The weather tends to be snowy, so pack warm!
