The Rugged Beauty of Idaho

By: Sonia Carstens

Most states put together marketing packets aimed at convincing people to come and visit their state (and in the process, spend some money while you are there, too!). You may have even seen some commercials on television trying to do the same thing. Of course these ads are promising everything under the sun to visitors and nearly every single state has to mention the fact that their state has gorgeous scenery and tons of things to do.

But we all know that advertising is not always true. We don't take them on their face value. We know that though the places they advertise may be there but the picture they present is often exaggerated. Almost all states boast of having plenty of outdoor activities but you must take these claims with a pinch of salt.

Idaho is different from that league. It is not just an advertisement; it is a real deal. This beautiful place has its natural wonders welcoming the visitors and no flashy tag lines to portray it as the theme park capital of the world or the gambling Mecca where you can make millions or lose even the hundreds that you have.

With 2.6 million acres of land and water to explore in the Boise National Forest, the place has the largest protected refuge in its kitty. It is not a surprise to know that Idaho is the state that has most wildlife acres under federal protection amongst all the states of the country.

Next in size is the Idaho National Forest. This popular tourist destination was created by combining three other national parks: Coeur d'Alene, Kaniksu, and the St. Joe National Forests. Located in the northern region of the state, the Idaho National Forest is a favorite spot for outdoor lovers as it offers visitors a wide range of activities.

The Idaho National Forest covers some of the most ruggedly beautiful mountains in all of the Rockies. There are four different mountain ranges that include Selkirk, Cabinet, Coeur d-Alene, and the Bitterroot Mountains. These daunting heights attract rock climbers from all over the world to test their skills. They find the challenge to scale these mountains irresistible since they are considered difficult because of their rugged nature and absence of accessible paths up the sides of the mountains.

Not only rock climbers but even hunters and fishermen come to Idaho to test their skills. Hunters find the mule deer, Rocky Mountain Elk, and other big game animals in Idaho. It's not surprising to find a lot of visitors during hunting season who come hoping to bag a trophy. The fishermen hope to get hold of great salmon. That explains why the area is a hot bed for fishing enthusiasts as well.

If you love pristine landscapes and the rugged beauty of Nature, then Idaho is the place you were mean't to live, or at least visit! While it cannot lay claim to some of the other tourist attractions offered by other states, Idaho can provide visitors with peace of mind and an experience that they will never forget as long as they live. The mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams of Idaho will be awaiting you when you arrive but make sure you bring some friends because good times are to be shared.
